CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION DEPARTMENT

PLUMBER

Protecting Our Neighbors and the Environment

We are proud that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Detroit's demolition program as one of the safest in the country, due to the many steps we take to protect our residents and the environment. Under general supervision, performs the more difficult plumbing work involved in the maintenance, construction, alteration and repair of water, drainage, heating, gas, other industrial or commercial systems, and related fixtures, fittings and accessories.

Examples of Duties

  • Studies and works from drawings, blueprints, rough sketches or oral instructions.

  • Inspects structure to determine obstructions to be avoided.

  • Selects appropriate fixtures and materials.

  • Locates and marks positions of pipe, pipe connections, and passage holes.

  • Cuts or bores openings in walls and floors to accommodate piping and pipefittings.

  • Cuts and threads pipe and bends pipe to proper angle.

  • Assembles and installs valves and pipefittings.

  • Connects tubing and fittings.

  • Squares tubing and fixtures.

  • Wipes and test joints.

  • Applies sealing compound and joins pipes in specified sequence.

  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as lavatory and kitchen facilities, heating equipment, drinking and exhibition fountains and sprinkling systems.

  • Repairs pipes, valves and traps of heating systems.

  • Repairs and maintains plumbing including mending burst pipe and opening drains.

  • Tests pipe systems for leaks.

  • Taps water and sewer mains and laterals.

  • Assists in general building maintenance work, as required.

  • Performs duties in accordance with Department safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designated personal protective equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • High school graduation or GED.

  • Completion of a United States Department of Labor registered plumber apprenticeship program.

  • Two (2) years of experience in the construction, repair, maintenance and alteration of plumbing facilities to include water, sewer and heat systems and related fittings, fixtures and accessories.

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Completion of trade related coursework.

Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid State of Michigan Journeyman Plumber License required.

  • Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned and will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle; valid State of Michigan Operator License required.

  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification at Wastewater Treatment Plant operations (WWTP) and Water Treatment Plants (WTP) are required by MIOSHA standards and Departmental policy to complete a health assessment questionnaire and pass a baseline physical.

  • As a condition of employment at WWTP and WTP, candidates must pass a respiratory fit test and remain ready to wear a respirator during all work hours. Facial hair may interfere with the proper fit of the respirator which may make shaving of facial hair a requirement.

  • Employees are required to pass an annual respiratory fit test. Baseline physicals may be repeated prior to the annual respiratory fit test when deemed appropriate.

  • Knowledge of piping, fittings, valves and other accessories used in the trade.

  • Knowledge of soldering, yarning, caulking, and wiping joints, service connections and other standard practices.

  • Knowledge of the State and City Plumbing Codes.

  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of plumbing construction.

  • Skill in utilizing wrenches, dies, pipe cutters, and other tools of the trade.

  • Skill in wiping joints.

  • Skill in physical strength and mechanical dexterity.

  • Ability to work from drawings, blueprints, rough sketches, or oral instructions.

  • Ability to utilize initiative and resourcefulness in troubleshooting difficult problems of plumbing installation and maintenance.

Physical Demands

  • Work involves walking significant distances and climbing stairs and ladders. Required to participate in training as set forth by the Department.

Work Environment

  • Work may be performed in an industrial environment that can involve exposure to loud noise from machinery, exposure to airborne particulates and aerosols, oxygen deficient and dangerous atmospheres, wet and slippery surfaces and indoor and outdoor environments.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
